Who?

4 Knowledge is Power, a Florida based nonprofit organization with 501c3 status, is organized to provide positive activities to the community in order to help individuals accomplish more through educational and cultural experiences in hopes of stimulating the desire to dream bigger, reach higher, and achieve more.  USA Step, a program of 4 Knowledge is Power, seeks to help fulfill this mission through the activity of stepping, also known as step dancing, in order to increase the community-level awareness of Stay Fit, First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Campaign, and youth empowerment.  It is our hope to empower low-income, at risk youth with tools that personify characteristics such as good sportsmanship, discipline, self esteem, knowledge as well as physical fitness.

What?

Stepping is a form of percussive dance in which the participant’s entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps.  Stepping may also draw from elements of gymnastics, break dance, tap dance, marching, or African and Caribbean dance.  The tradition of stepping in the African American community began during the mid-20th century with historically black colleges and university fraternities and sororities, as they traditionally sang and chanted to celebrate “crossing over” into membership of their respective organizations.  The tradition has also been embraced by Latino fraternities and sororities over the past decades.  Stepping has now extended to schools, churches, cheerleading squads, and drill teams across the United States of America.

When?

Statewide competitions will be held during the months of January through May as an alternative after school activity.  The Annual National Competition will be held in September of each year.

Where?

USA Step plans to promote the formation of step teams at local elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and community centers as well as solicit existing step teams in states across the nation to participate in statewide preliminary competitions held in local venues such as school auditoriums, gyms, etc.   The winners of the statewide preliminary competitions will proceed to an Annual National Championship.

Why?

By forging relationships with organizations committed to research and education such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Sororities and Fraternities, participants will be impacted and armed with healthy living solutions through seminars on the weekend of competitions.  The seminars will seek to provide positive affirmation and have curriculum that’s value and education based.  Potential seminars might include, but not be limited to, information in regards to the following:
